HUNTSVILLE, AL —Yorktown employee Larry Moores was recently honored with the prestigious Silver Star Medal, third-highest possible combat decoration for U.S. Armed Forces members. Family and friends attended the award ceremony on March 25th at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia.
Moores enlisted in the U.S. Army on his 18th birthday and was assigned to the 1st Ranger Battalion, 75th Ranger, for his first assignment after completing his basic training. He served in the 75th Ranger Regiment Unit in Somalia in 1993 and demonstrated exceptional leadership and courage during intense firefights and rescue missions when two U.S. Blackhawks were shot down. His unit exhibited extraordinary teamwork and resilience during the operation, and Moores’ leadership was particularly noteworthy.
Moores humbly credited his unit for receiving the Silver Star Medal, saying, “This Silver Star Medal is about those types of units and all of the months and months of hard work. It was an amazing opportunity to be a part of those special operations. I feel so blessed to have worked with the people that I did over all of these years. I never would have thought that I would have been able to do all of the things that I did and meet and work with so many amazing people along the way.”
In addition to this most recent honor, Moores was inducted into the Distinguished Member of the 75th Ranger Regiment in 2005 and the U.S. Army Ranger Hall of Fame in 2017 in recognition of his outstanding service and contributions.
