Yorktown Systems Group, Inc. was founded in 2008 with the goal of equipping the warfighter with the tools they need to be successful in the field. As the company grew, a core mission was to provide equal opportunity for their employees to grow both professionally and personally throughout their time with the company. Carolyn Green’s career with Yorktown started in 2011 through a contract supporting the Missile Defense Agency (MDA). As the company’s 35th employee, she’s seen the company grow from a small, Service Disabled Veteran Owned Business to one of the leading businesses supporting the Nation’s Armed Forces.
We sat down with Carolyn to hear, from her own perspective, how she’s grown since joining the Yorktown team. Read her answers below.
Q: It’s been 10 years since you began your career with Yorktown. How have you grown personally and professionally since you began? How have you seen the company grow?
A: I’ve been able to see my confidence grow substantially throughout my career at Yorktown. From my first day working with the company, I had their trust and have always felt their faith in me to do my job and represent Yorktown with pride. Because of leadership’s trust in me, I’ve learned to trust myself, too. I don’t second guess myself or my work, and I’m confident that I’m providing the best support possible for my team. I’ve been able to see that same confidence translate into my personal life.
I’ve seen the company grow so much since I first joined the team. I believe much of the company’s success can be attributed to the people they hire and how they treat the members of their team. Bryan Dyer (Yorktown CEO & Co-Founder) and Nancy Acquavella (Yorktown Chief Administrative Officer & Co-Founder) have a gift for hiring talented, dedicated and caring employees. They prioritize promoting from within the company and shaping a path for growth for employees that live by the Yorktown guiding principles. Because they treat each employee with respect and empathy, their employees support the company with passion.
Q: How has Yorktown supported you throughout your time with the company?
A: Yorktown treats their employees like family. They’ve always been there to support me inside and outside of the office during times of crisis or tragedy. The leadership team prioritizes their employees and customers in every decision they make, regardless of the company’s bottom line. It’s a unique feeling to be able to work every day knowing your company has your back. An employee that knows their company will support them is an employee that will support the company. That’s one of the many reasons I’ve stayed with Yorktown over the years and why I plan to stay with the company as long as I can.
Q: What is your favorite memory of working at Yorktown?
A: My favorite memory of working at Yorktown was actually my first time meeting Bryan and Nancy for my initial interview. I arrived at the Yorktown office dressed in business professional attire. Bryan, Nancy and I ended up sitting on their office floor and playing with a couple of puppies for the duration of the interview. Even though this was my first time meeting the two, they both felt like friends. I knew right away this was a company I wanted to work for.
Q: What is one piece of advice you’d give to a peer in the industry?
A: Always take pride in what you do. No matter what role you play, be confident that you’re contributing your best work to the company and remember who you’re doing it for. At Yorktown, my team and I are dedicated to supporting our end-user, the warfighter. Through my role as an administrative assistant (advanced), I’m able to support my team, who, in turn, support our Nation’s Armed Forces. I’m proud to be able to support my country even though I am not able to serve in uniform.
